What is a GST invoice?
A GST invoice, also called a tax invoice or GST bill, is the bill a GST-registered business issues when it sells goods or services. It shows what was sold, its taxable value and the GST charged on it. You report it in your GST returns, and a registered buyer needs it to claim input tax credit.
Only a registered business can issue one. If you aren't registered under GST, you can't charge GST at all, so you give a plain invoice instead. A registered business on the composition scheme, or one making an exempt sale, issues a bill of supply instead of a tax invoice.
Timing matters too. For goods, issue the invoice before or at the time the goods are sent out (or handed over, if they don't travel). For services, issue it within 30 days of supplying them, or 45 days for banks, insurers and NBFCs.
GST invoice format: what it must show (Rule 46)
Rule 46 of the CGST Rules, 2017 lists what a tax invoice must contain. Check your invoice against this list:
- Your business name, address and GSTIN.
- An invoice number of up to 16 characters (letters, numbers, - and /), consecutive and unique for the financial year.
- The date of issue.
- The buyer's name, address and GSTIN (or UIN), if the buyer is registered.
- For an unregistered buyer and a value of ₹50,000 or more: their name and address, the delivery address, and the state's name and code. Below ₹50,000, these are needed only if the buyer asks.
- The HSN code (goods) or SAC (services): 4 digits if last year's turnover was up to ₹5 crore, 6 digits above that. Up to ₹5 crore, you may leave it off invoices to unregistered buyers.
- A description of the goods or services, with the quantity and unit for goods.
- The total value, and the taxable value after any discount.
- The GST rate and the tax amount, as CGST and SGST (or UTGST) or IGST, plus any cess.
- For an inter-state sale, the place of supply with the state's name.
- The delivery address, if it differs from the place of supply.
- Whether tax is payable on reverse charge.
- The signature or digital signature of the supplier or an authorised representative.
- If you e-invoice, the QR code carrying the invoice's IRN.

How to create a GST invoice with this generator
Add your business
Type your business name, address and GSTIN as the seller. They print at the top of the invoice.
Add your client
Type the buyer's name, address and GSTIN. If the buyer has no GSTIN, choose CGST + SGST or IGST yourself; the place of supply shown beside the items helps you pick.
Number and date it
Keep the suggested invoice number or type your own series, up to 16 characters. Set the invoice date and, if you like, a due date.
Add the items
For each line, enter the item, its HSN/SAC code, quantity, unit, rate and GST rate. Add a discount on any line, or type prices including GST and let the editor work out the rate before tax.
Check the GST and totals
With both GSTINs in, the editor charges CGST + SGST on a sale within your state and IGST on one across states. It adds up the totals, can round off to the rupee (nearest, up or down) and writes the amount in words.
Make it yours
Pick the Modern, Classic or Minimal template and a colour; Classic heads the page 'Tax Invoice'. Add your bank details and a UPI QR code so the buyer can pay by scanning, your terms, and any line your invoice must carry, such as 'Tax payable on reverse charge: No', in the notes.
Download it
Press Download and sign up free with Google or email. Your invoice opens in your new account, ready to save and download as a PDF. With the account you can also fetch a client's details from their GSTIN and draft invoices with AI.

Frequently asked questions
GST invoice kya hota hai?
GST invoice (tax invoice) woh bill hai jo GST-registered business saman ya service bechne par deta hai. Ismein GSTIN, HSN/SAC code, taxable value aur CGST + SGST ya IGST dikhaya jata hai. Registered buyer isi se input tax credit claim karta hai.
What is the correct GST invoice format?
There's no single government template. Any layout works as long as it carries the particulars in Rule 46 of the CGST Rules: your GSTIN, a serial number of up to 16 characters, the date, the buyer's details, HSN/SAC, taxable value, GST rate and amount, place of supply, reverse charge and a signature. Use the checklist on this page.
Is HSN code mandatory on a GST invoice?
Yes, in most cases. If your aggregate turnover last year was up to ₹5 crore, show a 4-digit HSN or SAC code; you may leave it off invoices to unregistered buyers. Above ₹5 crore, show 6 digits on every invoice (Notification 78/2020-Central Tax).
Is a signature mandatory on a GST invoice?
Yes. Rule 46 asks for the signature or digital signature of the supplier or an authorised representative. The rule makes an exception for an electronic invoice issued under the Information Technology Act, 2000.
Do I need to issue e-invoices?
Only if your aggregate turnover has crossed ₹5 crore in any financial year since 2017-18. Then invoices to registered buyers and exports must be reported to the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) for an IRN, and since 1 April 2025, businesses with turnover of ₹10 crore or more must report each one within 30 days of its date. This editor makes the invoice; it doesn't generate an IRN.
What GST rate should I charge?
The rate set for your goods' HSN code or your service's SAC. Since 22 September 2025, the main rates are 5% and 18%, with 40% on a few luxury and sin goods. Some items are exempt, and a few have special rates, such as 3% on gold.
How many copies of a GST invoice are needed?
For goods, three: Original for Recipient, Duplicate for Transporter and Triplicate for Supplier. For services, two: Original for Recipient and Duplicate for Supplier (Rule 48 of the CGST Rules).
Can I make a GST invoice without a GSTIN?
No. Only a GST-registered business can issue a tax invoice, and Section 32 of the CGST Act bars anyone else from collecting GST. If you aren't registered, give a plain invoice without GST; our invoice generator makes one.
GST bill aur tax invoice mein kya fark hai?
Koi fark nahi. 'GST bill' tax invoice ka hi aam naam hai, aur dono mein Rule 46 ki saari details honi chahiye.
